Muse for Monday

Spring may be here, but the temperature has fallen dramatically.

Frozen Blanket

The fog rolls in over the tops of the trees,
Shrouding the buds of blossoms waiting in turn
To explode color onto the landscape and
Leaves as yet unfurled to wave in spring breeze.

The grey envelopes more than the eye sees,
Crushing the heart ready for love’s burn,
Extinguishing the fire before it can
Set ablaze the desires it will please.

The air is choking tender sensibilities
Otherwise still unwilling to spurn
Lovers’ warm embrace or groping hand,
Which satisfies all it can seize.

The thick blanket wraps tight to freeze
Chaser and chased before they learn
Only in love’s death will it ever stand
Content amid the scattered peace.

  1. Sorry, it might have been the fog that kept me from seeing it. Maybe it was the spring breeze that blew it over my head.

Sometimes there is beauty in words that are said,
But me, being shallow, let it go over my head.

  2. This poem lay heavy on me like the fog in it. All of the imagery and language is weighted down by the emotion it contains. The meanings are half shrouded in the poem, which leaves an elusive effect. But the title expresses the whole of the poem, and I feel I am under it when I read this time and time again. I breathe a heavy sigh at the end, but not a sigh that is relief.

  3. “… But, she wanted to, at least for a short time, be free and independent, before the daily grind took back its hold, gray and monochrome like the dark snow clouds hanging in the sky.”

    No spring here yet either.

    • That one is from your book, isn’t it? And why are you still using that email???

      Reply
      • Because I do not know how to change it. I open the page to get to your blog, and this is what shows up.

No, it’s not from my book.

          • I don’t see a log-out function. It’s giving me the “click here to register,” but I already did that. That is what confuses me … I never logged out after registering with my WordPress, so why it logged me out, I don’t know.

          • At the top of the comment box it says, “Logged in as: Alexandra Heep Log out?” Click log out. When you log back in, it will stick.

          • On the danger of sounding stupid … it does not say anywhere “logged in as”. Here is what it looks like when I comment: (copied and pasted the comment box)

But, don’t worry about it and don’t waste time over it trying to explain it more lol. I will figure it out.

  4. I love the pace of this piece… perhaps perpetuating possible breathlessness, providing the icy grey heaviness!!!
    Well done!!

  6. I love the fog! 🙂

Right now it is cold, there is snow on the ground (again) and a bitter wind, so I have to keep warm as best I can! 🙂

The poem is a world awaiting spring while wrapped in a grey shroud.

Will Spring once more bring love?

    I hope so… 🙂

    Love and hugs!

    Prenin.

  7. I read disappointment and spring doesn’t give relief to a hopeful heart.

    • That is it. The layering of the ice/shatter image in the last stanza are the loss of any chance the warmth will dissipate the fog. Great to see you today, Tess. xxx
