Flash in the Pan

Eileen’s hand shook as she reached for the sugar bowl. Her movements were erratic as she spooned the eighth teaspoon into the demitasse. The inky liquid neared the brim.

She absently lolled the spoon aroud before dipping it back into the sugar. When she put it to her lips, she gagged on the syrup.

The coffee slipped down the drain as she thought of the last time she remembered eating. “What day was he here?”
