What’s in the box?

It is Valentine’s night. Some of you will be home alone. For the ones, flying solo, I hope you bought yourself a huge box of bonbons and a new pair of shoes…or a golf club…or something nice. You deserve a Valentine.

Others of you will be out with Mate enjoying romantic food, wine, music, dancing, wrestling. I hope you remembered to tell your Valentine how much you love them and why.

The Box

Well, there you have it!
It’s all crystal clear.
I’d never had guessed
Without it right here.

Wrapped up so tight
And bound with a string.
It’s contents a mystery.
My mind off wondering.

Shiny and so bright
Or something sweet.
It’s not too heavy
For something to eat.

Maybe it’s diamonds.
No, maybe candy.
It could be screwdrivers.
Now, that’d be handy.

Is it a gift card
To my favorite store?
The shoes I would buy!
Sandals and pumps galore.

But what if it’s, no,
I just couldn’t say.
You know, it very well
Might be lingerie.

Lacy and racy
Or maybe just fun.
Oh, what if it’s a
Suit to lay in the sun?

“Why not open it?”
I hear you say.
“And spoil my surprise
For Valentine’s Day?”

You point to the calendar,
And then you sigh.
I giggle with glee
And a glint in my eye.

Off with the bow.
The paper’s all torn.
Inside the box
It look rather worn.

Folded so neatly
It’s your old sweatshirt.
My reaction’s confused.
You look rather hurt.

As I unfold it a
Picture flutters down.
We’re standing together
In that little town.

I remember the rose
You brought me that day.
It smelled so sweet
On Valentine’s Day.

So, I put on your shirt
And see something more
An envelope in the box.
“What is this for?

“You never write cards.”
“But today I did so.
I have something else
I needed to show.”

Carefully lifting.
Don’t want to tear.
My name inscribed
With hearts, love and care.

Slide out the card.
It’s thick on one side.
The picture so lovely
I warm up inside.

Opening slowly to find,
My heart skips a beat,
The rose from that day
Pressed flat and neat.

Beneath it the writing
Was not of some poet.
Instead in your hand,
Anywhere I would know it.

“I may not remember
All the dates and time,
But one will never
Fade from my mind.

“On Valentine’s Day
Those years ago,
You said you were mine.
Together we’d grow.

“The years have passed
And each one’s shown
How deep and how strong
Our love has grown.

“I love you today
More than I did then.
This Valentine’s know
I’d do it all again.”
