Wasting

Time is a measured resource we all know to have a finite amount, even if we do not know how much of it is our own. We mete it out in minutes, hours, days and so forth to accomplish those things we deem important and necessary. Occasionally, we let it slip away.

Sometimes, we fritter away our time engaging the tedium of mindless occupations or pursuits. We are engrossed in a toil or pleasure and the time escapes us unaware.

Other times, we merely are spectators to the clock. With idle hands and minds, we do absolutely nothing. Whether the time passes without a sound or with the ticking of the world as it cranks around its axis, its measured steps walk blithely away.

Have you ever watched time slip away? Did you sit motionless as the second hand swung ’round the face? A face whose stoic expression never acknowledged your concern over its motion stared back at you.

Or did you measure it in sunbeams as they slipped through the leaves of the trees, casting longer and longer shadows across your path? Perhaps, the twinkling of the stars and the rhythm of the cricket’s song metered out the minutes.

Is there serenity in the passage of time?

Wasting

The afternoon sun slants across the windswept plain.
A dust devil chases it tail between lazy rocks.
Losing interest in itself, it spins into nothing.

Isn’t it always the way?
Boring ourselves
Trying to find
Fascination in a new day?

Doldrums coat our skin, a layer of grit and sand.
A metronome sounds time ticking away on the clock.
Just to remind us of its ethereal passing.

Do we not get carried away?
Pondering time.
Relishing past.
Dreamily wasting today.

What are you doing when time gets away from you? What steals the sand from your hourglass? Is there a peace in the passage of time?

  1. Well done, I have been pondering this lately myself for another reason.

It seems like the vortex in which I work is getting more and more powerful at removing the seconds from my days…

  2. Remember this one?

Tempus Fugits as it may and all our dreams do fade away – and with them our immortality.

I remember posting this on a blog, however I cannot remember which, but it is my Haiku.

Every day I fill my hours with tasks to keep my mind occupied so I don’t think too much – for the pain is never far away.

    Love and hugs! 🙂

I had not read that one, but I really like it! I am awful at haiku. Simply terrible.

I am. I have so much to do…I have been encoding for the last two days and am dreaming in HTML. One day, I will get it across to companies that listing the lack of features is as important to a sale as listing the features. Fortunately for me, this is a one time process. Just happens to be one I really need about four sets of hands to complete in a timely manner.

I have begun, but need some down time to fully engage. I just need to load it to my tele, so I can do it when I am away from the screen. I will pay better attention there 🙂

  3. I waste time in my distractions. It seems to take me longer to do things than others, and that’s the main reason why. I have been contemplating putting myself on a schedule or using a timer to set a certain amount of time when I will finish a task before allowing any distractions (shiny things) to claim my time. Good post. I like the form of your poem (and the poem itself lol). Angie

Thank you. That is a good idea. It is one I employ to allow me to multitask. Intervals to check progress of tasks in motion. It really works.

  4. Time is available only to those who seize it graciously; Otherwise it slips past silently, never to be found. The pensive mood, far-away thought is where I find my time disappears… The solution is to throw away your Rolex….

I have lots of watches. They never have the correct time. I wear them as adornment only. I have long since stopped watching the clock. Life is too short to be worrying about being late. I spend mine in full motion! It is the best revenge.

  5. I think we jump onto a wave now and then with a collective consciousness as I too have been thinking of this of late.
    Good thoughts here 😉

There are a lot of us in very close synch, Raven. It is something in the air with the change of seasons. I am going to explore it more. 😉 Great to see you today.

  6. Some of my best moments are those spent in my “nothing box.” The moments when only the subconscious functions, but the conscious mind blocks the synaptical impulses that blur our lives.

Time is relative, according to Mr. Einstein. I agree, in a non-scientific sense.
Time is only relative to the degree we allow it to be.

I buy the theory of relativity, especially in relation to time. But do not get me talking quantum theory… I need more time in the nothing box…but I also need a large dose of intellectual stimuli.

Red works too hard at too many things. I work too hard on many things and at the end of the day I wonder where the time went. And what I did because time flies by at an alarming rate and the older I get the faster time goes by. I do believe it’s getting close to the time to say goodbye to the time eaters in my life. But then what?

  9. I know exactly what you mean. In daydream the time can simply disappear so quickly. Other times the minutes pass so slowly…

I try to harness the slow minutes. I consider it fighting aging…
