Bo Lumpkin (1950-2013)

Bo LumpkinThe M3 Blog is quiet today. It is time to show respect for Bo Lumpkin. You may recognize him from his comics, his caricature or his comments.

Bo Lumpkin was the MMIC of Gatorhead Comics. It brought us Geezerhood, Hank the Handyman, Edna and Mildred, Hospital Humor, AGAC (Ain’t Got A Clue), Burt & Kurt and KRUD-TV. Good wholesome humor, redneck wisdom and just a touch of ribbing.

Bo Lumpkin I've Been Thinkin'He was also the keeper of I’ve Been Thinkin’. Bo showcased his jewelry, his Dachshunds, his poetry and slices from his life at Gatorhead with his wonderful wife of 43 years and his church Shiloh Baptist Church. He talked about the everyday happiness we get from life. He also talked about the way he was dealing with his health.

Last year, Bo had a heart attack. Bearman Cartoons drew a comic showing Bo taking his break, in Gatorhead style. Bo was frank about his health, frank doused with humor. Over the course of 2013, he took a few breaks.

During a few of those breaks, Bo took the time to design a permanent resident of the RedmundPro Free Book Bin: Café Comics. He wanted to create a printable comic with ad space for budding comics and authors to distribute freely and share laughter with friends, family and complete strangers. It was another showing of how big his heart really was. Even if doctors told him it did not function well, everyone who met Bo in the funny papers or in person knew it did.

On November 22, 2013, Bo Lumpkin’s heart stopped beating.

For those of us who knew him, we are all blessed. He made things of beauty. He brought laughter to us all. He loved his life, his wife and his church. Bo Lumpkin was a special soul.

Please take a moment today to look at some of Bo’s creations, humor and wisdom. Share those moments with someone you love. Take a bit of Bo’s advice and do rather than think about it.

  2. I have not had the pleasure of crossing paths with Bo Lumpkin. I always find it sad when someone is taken before they have accomplished all they’d wanted to. Of course, that choice is never in our hands.
