He nearly jumped out of his skin. “Vincent Paul Caprizzi, just what do you think you are doing?” Her arms were crossed over the marabou collar of her robe, spine stiff, mouth puckered.
“It was supposed to be a surprise for your birthday, Mom,” he dejectedly whispered, shoulders slumped.
“Surprise? That is what you call… that?”
