Flash in the Pan

James crawled slowly across the tile stiff-armed, hoping to keep the swaying to a minimum. Surely, if he tilted too far in one direction, he would explode.

He drew his legs beneath him, keeping his spine as straight as possible. He pushed the lid open by lifting up onto his knees. If even one vertebra moved forward, he would be lost.

Kris tossed her keys on the counter and picked up the receipt. She rolled her eyes as she strode down the hall. She made the corner just as he lay down his head on the cool surface to rest.

“How many prayers to the porcelain god before it grants you the wisdom not to eat everything on the buffet in one sitting?” The sound of her voice startled him, and he jumped.

She left him to his novena. “Men. Never know enough is as good as a feast.”

  7. I’ve overeaten on occasion but I don’t think I’ve ever done it at a buffet…which is dumb, because if you’re going to do it, that would be the ideal place.
