Flash in the Pan

One hundred strokes with the hairbrush. Her best perfume. Brand new dress.

She looked at the clock in the hall. After sitting on the couch for three minutes, she looked at her watch.

There were wrinkles in her skirt. She consulted her wrist four times while the iron heated. She smoothed the skirt without taking off the dress.

She straightened all the chachkies on the shelf and eyed the clock again. She peeked out the curtains, every time she paced past the window.

Two hours later, the telephone rang. By the second ring, she knew he wasn’t going to come.
