Flash in the Pan

“Go down to the hardware and turn down Chestnut. Then, go down ’til you see the big oak tree that got hit by lightnin’. Go down that street past the big yella house on your left.”

“Is it much further?”

“No, just go down the next street for a couple miles. Take the left fork and go down Pearl Avenue. It is down past the water tower.”

“Would that be Satan’s ice water tank?”

Welcome to "Flash in the Pan"

Welcome to “Flash in the Pan”

This directionally-challenged flash comes it at 74 words against a 100-word upper limit. In a twist of unusual fate, the flash word appears seven times: down

This quarter’s book is called Finding the Path. All of the words are themed by directions. Have you seen them? Stop by the Flash in the Pan page to get ahead or catch up. The Hot Flash for July is already out!

Happy Flashing!

Do you know someone who gives girl directions? Why is the water tower Satan’s? To you, is south the same as down?

  1. Nope, cause then up’d have to be North, and I’m directionally challenged. I haven’t remembered the names for the main streets and one I live on in years. Move a landmark and I’m screwed.

    • I get lost with girl directions. Not for long though, I can find my way home from anywhere.

  2. hahaha I have gotten directions like these! I was more lost than ever and had to drive on to ask another person. Or anther and another. I think this happens just as often in the city as it does in the country, too. Kudos for using the word seven times!

I don’t know what girl directions are, haha. To me, south is not down, unless we are talking about interstates. Love this flash, Red!

    • Girl directions use landmarks. Guy directions use street numbers. I am the one who knows which side of the street things are on based on the address number. xxx

  3. Based on those directions it is safe to say that I think it is time to purchase a Sat Nav 🙂 Well either that or continue to be lost. What a great little flash Red and yes I have all the new words thank you 🙂 Hey I hope that you are not doing too much again, remember to have a nice long relaxing sleep sometimes, I was going to say bath there but it might have been seen as naughty and you know me, innocent as ever 🙂

Have a lovely rest of evening Red 🙂

    • Pish tosh. I am the one who calls the bath my boardroom. 😉 I think I would be better off with the miserable GPS than these directions. I have been known to get directions, then call up GPS to see if they are right because they interfere with my internal navigator.

  4. Down is not south. We go ‘down the shore’ which is east of us. We go down the street. When I was working I worked downtown.

  5. I always say up north and down south. I haven’t thought about why or where this started.

Yep, I’ve been given directions something like this but I don’t think of them as girl directions. Your flash made me remember trying to follow them though and yours made me laugh out loud.

Go down two concessions, no, I think it’s three, turn left at the yellow house, drive about two miles and turn left at an old barn that hardly has any paint on it. Ha ha ha.

    • LOL! Where I live, roads’ names change when you go a sufficient distance. It is far safer to give ppl the numbers rather than the names. 😉

The worst directions I got included “Old man Roberts’ house.” There are about 400 Roberts around me, and the owner of the house to which was referred had been dead for four years… the family that lived there was Sanchez. xxx

  6. South is down, Up is north. I guess it’s based on a map’s standard orientation.

  8. I am directionally challenged in another way. I want to take part in this because I really enjoy flash fiction. I can write a flash for all the direction words? How exactly do i link so they are entered into the compeition? Sorry to require such spoecifics, but it doesn’t take much to get me turned around.

    • You have got it. You need to stop by The Green Room (look at the top menu bar) and leave a link to your blog. Welcome to M3.

      • Is there an issue with the Forum today? I am unable to login at all. I do not even get to the login screen. Actually my questions is about how I get my entries to show up on the list with each word. I submitted Down earlier this week and saw a linkback on this post, but nothing else happened.
