Flash in the Pan

She winced slightly as the blade drug across her forearm.

The blood welled up along the cut and formed a drop at the end.

It would take nearly three weeks to heal because she would pick the scab off so it would scar. What was the point of a sixth trophy if no one could see it?

What could the cut marks be a trophy for and why would she want to show them? Is scarification any different from tattooing? Do you think this behavior is new?

    • This is a common American colloquialism. American dictionaries all recognize it as an acceptable form. Even I can do dialect πŸ˜‰

  5. I don’t know what kind of a trophy this is. I have been close to people who scar themselves in this way and were eager to show me. It seems to be an act of pulling out of numbness of some kind. The pain and visibility of it might keep someone grounded in reality. But I am only guessing, and would like to hear from someone who knows. I know this practice isn’t new, it’s been around for ages.

    • The psychology behind cutting is to feel something when sure there is nothing at all. The bloodletting is proof there is life force. IOW, the cutter is not dead inside or out.

Our flash guest is not an emo cutter. She is using the scars as trophies.

Search “tattoos” here for a run down of exactly how old this practice is. πŸ™‚

  6. I don’t know if I love this one, it is telling though. Fades to dark secrets, locked doors and angled hallways in the basements of our minds.

    • I think that puts you firmly in the majority, my friend. Very few of us are willing to self-inflict. It is fascinating to wonder what she could be so proud of she would cut herself to show it off. Are you getting ready for All Hallow’s Eve?

  10. well, as soon as I stop shuddering, I can tell you that there is a condition called dermatillomania, which causes those afflicted with the condition, to pick at wounds and such, that could go on forever, if allowed. That comes from some sort of need for perfection, I understand…

darkest place I’ve heard you speak from, or sure!!

    nonetheless, WELL DONE!!
    I’m still shuddering…

    • Two of my autistic children have it. It is a specific form of OCD. My son has it worse than my daughter. It is a common “side effect” of autism.

So…what is the trophy for? *grins* Dark is really good sometimes. <3
