Flash in the Pan

The campfire cracked and popped. “I knew that pine was too green. Should’ve picked up more of the mesquite. The venison is going to taste funny.”

“Oh, just turn the spit.” Conrad wondered for the hundredth time why he brought Kelsey along.

“The spit is getting hot,” Kelsey whined. Conrad crawled into the tent and bundled into a sleeping bag with his new magazine.

“Do you smell that?” Kelsey squinted to see in the darkness. “Something out there is on fire.”

Conrad stuck his head out of the tent. The wind shifted and blew smoke in his eyes. His vision blurred in a haze.

When it cleared, he realized he was at home in his bedroom, and the smoke was pouring in around the door.

Welcome to “Flash in the Pan”

Do you camp? Do you like flame-cooked food? Have you ever been as close as Conrad to a fire?

What is your favorite preparation for turkey? Does your family celebrate with “traditional” Thanksgiving food?

  2. That was a very nice surprise! Well, not for Conrad.

I guess I’m a traditionalist and prefer my turkey cooked. No turkey sushi for me. And pumpkin pie, also cooked. All the other stuff is good too, but turkey & pumpkin pie is enough for me.

    • I can skip the turkey every year. I prefer duck or alligator or fish. And rice dressing is a must. Seven meats, a handful (literally) of veggies and rice. I could have just that. Mmm.

For me, the pie is pecan. And where I come from, it is pronounced “pah-kahn”. A “pee-can” is what you use not to have to put on your boots and trudge to the latrine when it is cold.

      • oh grandma used to make homemade pecan every year, and homemade chocolate, coconut and red velvet,…..this year I wore the cake mix, I got it everywhere but in the bowl….

        • We just made pecan this year. Last year, I ended up throwing away parts of three pies. I can only viably eat so many pieces. What I did not make, which I probably will next week is a mincemeat. Mmm. I have not had one since last holidays.

  3. My idea of camping comes with electrical hookups, running water at the site, showers, and a laundromat.

    • So very good to see you, my fine sir. While my children would agree with you, I have to wonder… Is this thought independent of Charlie Brown?

  6. I grew up with family camping vacations, and well into my twenties camped with my own family. I’d love to try the venison on a spit! Never had it, but I’m a big meat eater. I did the traditional this year, downscaled because I had four at my table. I love this flash, Red, what a sense of alarm at the end. I’ve never been this close to a house fire until after the fact. It was horrific. But a kitten survived in the heating duct, when all else was destroyed. That was uplifting!

    • Mmm on a spit is the best. I have done the camping thing with my children as well. We have graduated from tents to cabins in my old age. We never skimp on the campfires, boating or fishing, though. I attempted to downscale at every turn. I lost when the turkey turned out to the huge. How uplifting, indeed. I wish I could say the same.

  8. WOW! You had me.

Even after: ‘His vision blurred in a haze’, you do not expect the ending. The flow is so natural and smooth.

    Wonderful, Red.
