Flash in the Pan

What was the sound in his head? It was almost like hammering. Or was it drumming? Sometimes, it is hard to differentiate between the two. What he did know was it was a horror soundtrack waiting to be unveiled for the masses.

He pushed himself up off the floor, shoulders creaking and popping with the effort. For the third time this week, he wondered why he slept on the floor. When he turned, he caught sight of why just before the blazing flash of pain ripped through his skull. As he squinted from the light, he swore: Not mundane curses which flow from stubbing a toe on a piece of furniture in the dark, but the outpouring of profanity-filled vitriol which only comes compliments of having one’s head in a vise.

When he slowly opened his eyes, praying for darkness, or maybe blindness, he faced it: The bottle.

Welcome to “Flash in the Pan”

~~~~~
Today’s word was actually vice. I took the opportunity to use the homophone because it was far more fun to make the allusion. If you are playing along with Flash in the Pan, you are welcome to one or the other. Remember, for July, the upper limit is 150 words. If you play at your place, please link back to this post for Vice/Vise flashes.
Have you ever felt his vise? Teetotalers speak up! Is this a good reason to forego the bottle?
    • This is very much a new thing for me. I am hoping to gather quite a few of them together for a book in the end. I have about a half dozen scheduled…provided the M3 Readers continue to enjoy them. Great to see you today.
  2. I slept on the floor a time or two. OK, maybe three or four. OK half my life. I owned a bed but the vodka never allowed me to crawl far enough to get to it.
    • I think that is his problem. Now, if the vodka came with a pillow and blanket inside the bottle…
  5. Vitriol is such an awesome word …so ucky and .. ahhhh yes. I have slept on the floor a time or two..and other places much worse. well maybe about the same ..but no more! and yes I would say that is as good a reason as any to give it up. The feeling of waking up in the morning without panic, and feeling …good.. before you put anything into your body..is well worth it. At some point I got to the point where all it did was knock me out anyways or convince me I wanted to… mixing it with my illness can be a time bomb.. an atomic bomb.. catastrophic consequences.. I miss a good cold one in the summer heat.. but I dont miss the after effects and that is enough to keep me away..
    Sooo if we do it on our blog… do we call it flash in the pan ? Link back here I know.. and is it any old thing we can think of about the word?
    Just want to make sure I got it ..:-)
  6. Nicely done. Flash fiction properly done is a concentrated shot of bourbon that grabs your attention and leaves an impact. Oh wait – not a good metaphor.
    I’m a joiner, so I’ll play along. I’m not fully clear about the instructions however. Are we supposed to write a flash fiction based on the topic you’ve given us, e.g. “vice?” Or am I just confused and in need of further instruction? (a most common occurrence with me)
    • The word is vise or vice, whichever suits you better. July is 150 words as a max. Link back to the post with the original word. The link to the first Flash in the Pan has the whys and wherefores, but that is the condensed version. The first one was a head scratcher. The votes are mixed as to whether it was a light or dark one.
  7. You did wonderfully with this one! Caught me off sides.
    I have no vices…..well except Gin, Vodka, Tequila…and all of them had to be set aside. Dammit.
    Now you know why I gave up getting drunk – I used to wake up on the bathroom floor just from my panic attacks! LoL!!!
    • I think it is enough to make me forego the grape, as it were. I do not think I have had that much to drink in…does it count I cannot remember that long ago?
  9. I was just about to offer you some of the Red stuff but in all the confusion the Zombies have made off with it, mind you I will probably catch up with them later, well if they can dig themselves out of that really big hole 🙁
    Drinking can be so self obliterating…
    Have a fine rest of evening Red 🙂 😉
