How Do You Do It?

How about a top ten to the number one question in the SIB?

I can pencil me in a month from Thursday.

1. Schedule.

You do not have to work everyday to appear to work everyday. Set a schedule which is comfortable for yourself. Write when you have time and schedule the posts (releases) at intervals you can maintain.

2. Be a horse.

No one wants information from the ass’ mouth. Know your subject. Information is not someplace toΒ fake it until you make it.

3. Breathe.

Pick an adage.

  • Rome was not built in a day.
  • The job will still be there tomorrow.
  • “To do nothing at all is the most difficult thing in the world, the most difficult and the most intellectual.” ~ Oscar Wilde
One of life's toughest choices is deciding to walk away or try harder.

You can do this.

What does not get done today, may be completed tomorrow. The world was here before you came along. It will not crumble in your absence.

4. Schedule disasters.

Give yourself time for things to go horridly awry. When they do not, you have a lot of recess time. If you are a workaholic, you will get very far ahead.

5. Feed.

Eat regularly (Yes, this includes drinking coffee.); otherwise, you will collapse. Feed your mind; otherwise, it will starve and die of neglect.

6. Laugh.

…at someone else. (It may not be nice, but it helps.)

…with someone else.

…at yourself.

Laughter makes you feel better. It will give you a better perspective.

7. Believe.

Eleanor Roosevelt quote meme

Set your mind to it, and you can do it. Believe you can succeed, and others will help you make your dreams come true. Most everyone would prefer to be friends with a winner than console a loser. Use that to your advantage.

8. Give back.

If you have a better mousetrap, why are there rats in your neighbor’s silo? This is never a time waster. This creates more opportunities.

9. Rest in peace.

I have to get up, why?

When you get to 189 words and have said all you need to say, stop. I am the only one counting words, and my primary project wants fewer. This gives you more time to read (feed) and interact.

10. Turn it off.

Being an addict is not going to get you more engagement. The occupants of the FAB world are the ones who engage because they are getting away from their FAB world. Lying in wait to pounce on them is just creepy. Take a break. Your work here is done well.

See? It really is not all that difficult. What is your secret to success?

  2. “Pick an adage.” I rely on my mom’s old favorite: This too shall pass. Sometimes “this” takes far too many years for my taste, but so far every “this” has passed. Good and bad.

    • That is a good one. Some of them I would have liked to put out of my misery rather than wait for their natural causes. πŸ˜‰ Great to see you. Are you back on wifi in the woods? xxx

      • wifi in the woods…..if I ever start a blog (highly doubtful), that would make the perfect title.
Most of what I would say, however, would be geared toward rants that the recent ordeal doesn’t seem to have helped my speed past an iota.

  4. Hi Red… I couldn’t help myself but respond to a couple of comments to you today. I got a lot out of all comments here today, even a couple chuckles (“grown up grown ups”)!
My takeaway here is that not only need we make arrangements for external obstacles to have the least impact on our day, but, as well, internal analysis. One can do all the things you suggest, yet still be broken and blocked by the unidentified demons that lurk in our subconscious!
thanks for a very appropriate/apropos (to me) post today, my friend. There is much profundity within these pages!

  6. Well said Red. Life is (or can be) a creative journey taken one delicious step at a time. Having a sense of humor is the most essential trait of a good project manager — along with slipping float time into the schedule and hiding money to pay for out of budget items later.

Now that I’m retired I don’t schedule nearly as much as I did when I was working as a PM. I’m becoming the nap champion of Gloucester County, NJ. My sleep patterns have been out of whack for the past year. I wake up several times during the night and usually am wide awake between 5:00 AM and 6:00 AM and sometimes sooner.

So when I wake up too early I just get up. Then I meditate, write my morning pages, fix and eat breakfast. Tracy gets up at 7:00 AM and I go back to bed for my nap. Love those naps. This morning I slept until after 10. Delicious.

    • Taking turns with Tracy for the bed is familiar territory for me, even though I am in the bed far too infrequently. When is the voting for nap champion? I am sure I can round up a few supporters for you. πŸ˜‰ Terrific to see you today, John.

I wish other people would take your “less is more” type attitude when it comes to posting. Too lengthy a post makes me want to move on. Edit people, edit.
