Prompt: My Favorite Texts

blackberry cell phone

In an age where conversations have dwindled and texts are favored over talking via telephone for myriad reasons, there are some texts which are head and shoulders above the rest.

1. The Good Morning/ Goodnight text

Whether it is from Mate, BFF or even Quaint, the good morning text lets us know we are the first thing on someone’s mind.

The goodnight text is like a kiss whilst being tucked into bed. Regardless of the presence of passion in the kiss, having someone wish us sweet dreams is wonderful.

2. Picture Text

cheesy emoticonHow often have you gotten a meme from social media or a friend and the very first thought is This would make ______ laugh!? Send it.

Before you post your newest selfie on Facebook, think about sending it to someone who may be missing you. Make someone smile even if you are not sure how their day is panning out by sending them a real-time smiley face… yours.

3. Remember?

You are (doing laundry, working, at a restaurant) and remember a fun time. Text the person you were with, especially if you are not with them at the moment. Let them know you are thinking about a time when you were happy with them.

4. Random Questions

Get to know more by sending a random question as it passes your mind.

  • What color are your shoes today?
  • Where did you live when you were 15?
  • Have you ever had acupuncture?
  • If you were a tree, which kind would you be?
  • How do you like your eggs cooked?

Showing interest in someone makes them feel special and shows them you are thinking about them. Volunteer your answer, so they are not convinced you are a stalker.

5. I love you.

It is the perfect thing to say when you cannot spell supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. Make someone’s day. Think about all the people you do love, besides Mate. Yes, send it to them.

  1. I don’t send many texts, but you just described how I behave on Facebook! 🙂

    • Many of us use social media in lieu of texting mainly because it reaches a larger audience with the same effort.

  2. As the possessor of arthritic thumbs the size of a salad plate, texting has always been more of a frustration than a boon for me. Thus, my favorite text, both to send, and receive, is “Call me, please…”

    • Voice to text has become my go-to for texting all the time now. It also serves for memos, lists, searches, basically anything with a text box requiring my input. The shortcuts I use to create everyday phrases (and foreign words) are short enough and spaced appropriately to be able to text them even in the dark in my sleep (like that happens). It has improved so significantly, it is adapting to *my* speech pattern.

  3. We have a cell phone devoted to emergency (and semi-emergency) calls out, and even our two friends who have that number don’t use it because we forgot our passkey to voice mail before we got out of the parking lot of the store where we bought it (and lost the paper it was written on, on the drive home), and have never troubled ourselves to ask the phone people for it. I sometimes imagine those missed calls piling up in the recesses of the phone, gathering dust like little dead spiders.

    • I am opposed to voice mail at a cellular level, pun entirely intended. I only listen to it when it is full, and then only to delete all of the messages without letting them play through. If it is important enough, people call until they get me or simply text. I love the image of dead spiders. That is grand!
