Day 8: Who’s hungry?

Red

Makes me see…

I have made more than my fair share of jokes about people who share what they had for breakfast on social media. How ironic is it one of the posts in this challenge is What did you eat today?

I have a relatively non-existent diet. I have never measured time by meals and frankly do not foresee a time when I will. Time is measured in pots of coffee. No, that does not explain my lack of solid food, thank you for playing.

Hypoglycemia

In a country where artificial sweeteners are as prevalent as citric acid, I am in an über-minority. I have an overactive pancreas (among other organs I am loath to remove). Without a relatively constant source of glucose input, I get cold, tired and listless. My sugar tends to peak around 90. The lowest I have ever caught it was 40. (The doctor rounded up.)

The fact phenylketonurics put me into a coma makes the choice between sugar and sweetener a non-starter.

Extra Large Coffee CupWhile fruit and vegetables are good choices for me to supply the sugar, I would quickly shrink down to nothing. I know. I have done it. Given my secondary profession as a coffee drinker (as witnessed by the size of my cup), I lightly sugar my coffee.

This mimics an intravenous drip of sugar all day. Since my blood glucose level rarely drops low enough to trigger hunger sensations, I rarely eat before my stomach sounds like an approaching thunderstorm. At which point, I am hard pressed to remember the last time or food I have eaten.

Then, I am still unlikely to have any desire whatsoever for a meal, as my stomach is filled with liquid. Even cooking for others, I have little inclination to eat what I have cooked.

Short List

Breakfast: None

Lunch: Granola bar

Dinner: Asparagus, beets and water chestnuts

Dessert: Peach

All in total, not a bad day for my stomach. Around 500 calories from food and another 300 from coffee/sugar. From emerging research, it means I will live an additional 5-10 years. Not so sure that is a good thing, come to think of it.

Do you set your watch by a meal clock? Are you a calorie counter or do you eat until you are full? Are you a coffee fanatic?

(Writers need not answer the last question. Everyone knows it is a qualification.)

  1. I usually get breakfast somewhere between 9 and 11, it depends on when I start to get sick. This morning it’s only 9am and I”m having pea salad.

  2. I eat whenever I get a chance but lately my appetite has not been what it used to be actually I am wasting away to “normal” because I haven’t been eating as much. I used to drink coffee up until about 10 at night but now I try to cut the caffeine in the afternoon and I sleep better.
When I post about food on Facebook I get more comments than on anything else.
I think I like to eat because I enjoy cooking or maybe I enjoy cooking because I like to eat.
I don’t use sugar because my triglycerides usually run from 750 to 1300 and that is a heart attack waiting to happen.
My wife says I am committing suicide with a knife and a fork.
I don’t count calories because math would take the fun out of eating.

    • I have to accept the triglycerides, but you have me beaten hands down. I will never understand the obsession Facebook has with food. It is nearly as bizarre as the Twitter buzz about it.

  3. I am not interested in food, except when I am cooking for others. Like you, I am a coffee drinker right up until I go to bed. I forget to eat and usually do so only once a day. It’s something light and I don’t keep sweet anythings in the apartment. I just don’t like desserts or cookies or pastry. I’m not tiny, but I did lose half a person in weight eating protein, green vegetables, and cottage cheese with a little fruit thrown in over a three year span. I had to get the weight off my joints. I am much healthier all around now and happier.

    • I am in the process of dropping some weight I gained during the launch. I spent far too long in front of the screen and not enough moving around 😉

  4. I eat very regularly. I watch what I eat and think most things are too sweet, too salty, and too fatty.

  5. I don’t measure time by meals. There are times when I eat and other times, I forget. Not a coffee drinker either. I love orange juice and herbal teas though. On a side note, I probably watch more TV than I should.

  6. I sleep crazy patterns, so I find myself eating when hungry, but small meals, as I’m trying to lose the equivalent of seven bags of sugar because of my joints which hurt less since I went from 120Kg to 105Kg.

Exercise isn’t an option, but if I walk more than twice to the shop and back then I am usually in a lot of pain, but I don’t give in! 🙂

I drink tea until I have my second meal, then fruit juice until I get ready for bed and water until I go to sleep.

Currently I’m trying to keep to 1,800 calories per day and I’m doing pretty well!

The trick is to take it off gradually so I don’t regain it when I finally quit.

It’s been about three years, but I’m not giving up! 🙂

Sorry you have medical problems hun – I didn’t know.

    Love and hugs!

  8. Wow! 500 calories in a whole day? I could eat that just for breakfast! (That is not a good thing) I didn’t know that’s what it was like. Thanks for sharing.

I usually only eat twice a day because I can’t eat when I first get up. One reason is my thyroid meds & the other is eating when I first get up makes me nauseous. I have to take another med an hour before dinner & I have to take this on an empty stomach too, so no eating between brekkie & dinner. I eat dinner usually at a particular time because hubby actually wants to eat a meal when he gets home from work (go figure?)

  10. Food. Love it. Good stuff. I wouldn’t mind it though if I could stop thinking about it on occasion.

Why do we find so much interest in other’s eating habits? Food preferences? And a good picture of beautiful meals?
