Muse for Monday

MantraI want to take a few moments to thank all of those who left supportive comments and sent emails whilst I was away. I appreciate your concern and support. The end of the week was particularly hard for me, and Mantra recognized it early.

The impish one was trying, in her own way, to give me advice. As usual, it would fall on the cloth ears attached to the stone at the end of my neck. I was hospitalized this weekend. No worries. I am progressing well and should be back to my normal (whatever that is) self shortly.

Meanwhile, what the pixie created for you for tonight is a place many of us have been before. It takes many different guises. Sometimes, it is merely physical. Other times, it is mental. Either way, pain is real.

As is customary, the title of this poem is simple: Pain. It takes us on the path we travel to get to relief.

Pain

Clenched in a vice would be better.
It offers relief if you reach
The handles of the crank or get
Someone to release the setter.

No matter how you move, this way or that
You are caught beneath the powerful tide.
Wave after wave hits. Each bearing one new.
Trembling or shaking or dripping with sweat.

Knees become weak as you fall to the ground.
Stomach flips and threatens to make you sick.
Light pierces the bone and sears grey matter.
You duck and cover from the weest sound.

In darkness, you’re begging for sleep to come,
But the pillows are boulders, mattress a stone.
Hot water pouring brings short-lived relief,
But agony receded is welcome.

You give in to pills with no guarantee
The pain will subside, but you’ve tried it all.
From the throbbing, wrenching, torturous pain,
Something must exist to make you pain-free.

Just wish one would take away the pain…

Have you ever suffered from migraines or physical pain as described in the poem? Do you try everything else before you head for the medicine cabinet or the pharmacy? What is the one pain in your life you would like to eradicate?

Glad you liked this one. When I wrote the lead to this one, I considered expanding on the last quote you chose, as indeed, it is why we even bother. Motivation is a strange and wondrous thing in many ways. Good to see you this morning, Candy!

  5. So sorry to hear you haven’t been yourself. Migraine? Pain does wicked things to a body.

I used to have them when I was in my late teens. Not anymore.

  6. ack – hope you are feeling better and on the mend.

I have a screwed up back.. blown disk, degenerative disc disease arthritis and the bones grind on each other. I just lived with it for a long time then I found narcotic pain relievers were a dream.. you never realize how cranky and ..depressed chronic pain can cause you to be until you find something that takes it away. I no longer take them I just try to avoid hard floors, bending twisting, um.. lots of things but I am working on natural pain relief and strengthening the muscles and Alleve – I swear by it. The one pain in my life I would like to eradicate? Heh Heh… ummm, just one?

Glad you are back and hope you are well. (((Hugs)))) Lizzie

I truly think we are twins. I have DDD in all of my cervical vertabrae as well. The arthritis I have lived with so long I hardly notice it, until it is my shoulders…ugh. I rarely do pain relievers which is why the time before this I was hospitalized, the doctor wanted to know how I was vertical. I have 104 fever and was septic. He said there was no way I was not in pain. I was, but I likened it to everyday functioning. He just shook his head. Such good bedside manner, eh?

      And yes…just one! {HUGZ} xxx

  8. Sorry to hear you are in such pain my friend! 🙁

I had a lot of joint pain for years and the doctor just kept shovelling pain killers at me.

In the end I went on this damned diet and lost 14 kilos.

End result? I lost the pain!!! 🙂

Hope you get well soon sweetheart!

    Love and gentle hugs! 🙂

I am not one for pain killers. I have an ethereal threshold for pain, which makes my doctors crazy. It is often the case with them though. They would rather treat the symptoms than extinguish the cause. I think it is a bastardization of the Hippocratic oath. They translate “do no harm” into “let there be no pain” which is not the case. I prefer a cure to treatment on all days which end in Y. {HUGZ} xxx

I am in the US. I do not use much for pain. I believe in the healing of water more than any other substance. Giving the body it needs to build the weapons to fight is always the best path. {HUGZ} xxx
