Fire Reflex

At heart, I have always been a pyromaniac. Fire is comforting on so many levels. It provides warmth and light, both can be harnessed to make many other things possible.

I can remember breaking the glass out of my mother’s wood burning stove when I was a teenager. It was only tempered to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. That winter, I melted the center of more than half a dozen cast iron fire grates. I am of the opinion, bigger is better when it comes to fire. Bigger, for me, necessarily means hotter.

Yes, I do control the burn. I have been burnt. I have had a house burn to the ground. All of those things keep me respectful of its power. Beyond its physical power, fire has an immense influence emotionally.

Fire.

Heat

The flames lick ’round the door,
Reaching for the sky.
Warm and bright, they dance
In the pale moonlight.
The shadows play ‘cross the lawn,
Pixies without flight.

Your fingers lace through mine,
Squeezing just enough.
Strong and sure, you keep
Me safe and near.
Your gaze pierces my stare,
Allaying my fear.

Your lips brush against my skin,
Drawing my breath short.
Gentle and sweet, love calls
My heart to beat.
One touch captures desire,
Stoking the heat.

  1. Fire in my old forge will turn steel white-hot so it can be welded or molded like soft butter and turned into the sharpest blade. A campfire also softens hearts as it warms them, sparks escaping the heat as they fly to the blackness of the night sky, seeking God…as lips caress…

  2. When I was a kid, I loved playing with a magnifying glass — burning holes in leaves and other fun things.

Nothing better in life than sitting around a fire and feeding it wood… unless it happens to be in my favorite place.

I love camp fires. I have to be careful where I make them, as I like the fire bigger than I should 😉 And I have the pix to prove it!

  6. Sounds like me as a kid, too, Red!
Just between you and me there are a great deal of melted plastic army men buried near my parents’ home to prove it!

I think the first toy casualty for me was when I was three. My GI Joe (you need to read the poem Pacing) decided my neighbor’s Barbie was a witch and burnt her at the stake. *Wicked grins*
