Mantra at the crack of dawn is a strange and eerie sound: an oxymoron exercised in juxtaposition.
Most mornings hold the final scenes of dreams, sweet or bone-chilling. Today, not so much. The lantern rattled to end a verse begun at an interrupted time. Not only is it rare to return to unharvested fields, but also the delivery vehicle is not standard issue.
Flowers are often found in Mantra’s verse, but most often they are nothing more than accessories to the scene. Today, they personify the theme. Do not be fooled by the simple title, Wish Fertilizer. It is truly a play on words.
Good morning.
Wish Fertilizer
I tripped on the shadow of a daisy
walking across a field of broken dreams.
I wondered how the flowers could flourish.
The warm thatch was thick beneath my belly,
a mattress teeming with life in the sun.
Brilliant color danced with summer’s panache.
Just beneath the tender green shoots and leaves
were gristle and dry bones, yesterday’s blooms,
A support network of lives lived fully.
Each gave their beautiful best one warm spring,
faded dusky color in autumn’s chill,
folded beneath the crush, white and snowy.
Now, the new blooms benefit from the past;
The cycle of life is again complete.
Unbeknownst lies potential’s wasted wish.

Although we know we could not be where we are without those who went before, do we ever consider the unfulfilled dreams of those who sacrificed for us?

/ July 29, 2013Oh yes, it makes me immediately think of my mom who sacrificed so much for me, and my own unfulfilled dreams.

/ July 29, 2013There is so much we will never get to do, and I would think it’d be rare for anyone to achieve everything they wanted to do.

/ August 1, 2013That makes me wonder if we dream too much or just have a massive lack of action when it comes to getting what we want.

/ July 29, 2013I read broken dreams turned to dust. Although possibilities still exist they’re cast aside (insecurity, age, more important things to do).
The dreams aren’t dead, they’ve been transferred to someone else.

/ August 1, 2013I rather like the idea of shared dreams passed to the next generation. Makes me wonder if we subliminally plant them in our children when we know we have to set them aside. Interesting concept, Tess. xxx

/ July 29, 2013Love your poem.
Juxtaposition is one of my all time favorite words.
My grandmother had a saying: “If wishes were horses, beggars would ride.” I like this kind of folk wisdom.
I spent my morning and early afternoon in chemo and while relaxing in my totally connected recliner whipped out my portable Neo and ripped out most of the first draft of a creative writing exercise.

/ August 1, 2013Oh, brilliant! Glad you are writing creatively. I hope you are feeling well after your treatment.
My mother and I both still say that. Of course, I usually use “If frogs had wings, they wouldn’t bump their butts when they hopped,” but the same logic applies. 😉

/ August 1, 2013Me also. I really did not want “unbeknownst” until the line was complete. Then, it had to stay. xxx

/ July 30, 2013I agree with Val on this one, the last line has so much punch, and the whole poem speaks out in a way that is pleasing my great friend 🙂
I think that whenever one sacrifices their own chances and gives others that push in the right direction it just goes to show the real calibre of the wish, and so the opportunity should never be wasted. I have enjoyed reading this one Red, a lovely thought provoking effort and thank you for offering it 🙂

/ August 1, 2013Cool take on this one. The flowers should be grateful. I like the thought. I wonder how many blooms think of such a thing. 🙂

/ July 30, 2013The unfulfilled dreams of others is all the more reason we should live to our fullest potential. I don’t think anyone ever sacrificed their dreams so that would remain stagnant and never do anything.

/ July 31, 2013That is just the evolution I want for my unfulfilled wishes… to fertilize, to add will and power to the wishes of those who would follow me.
Even my unfulfilled dreams have a destiny! Who knows, it could enhance itself for my next time around with bigger and better dream to perform!
Let it not be wasted… rather, recycled for future manifestations.
