Muse for Monday

Mantra of M3Each of us have one now. Many of us have had so many, it is hard to keep them all in one place. Some we have lost. Others we have broken. What do they do to us?

Tonight’s poem is simply titled WithinWhether held within the mind or the heart, they can eat at our souls. Why do we keep them? Why do we not simply forget them or let them go? Perhaps, we should do both.

Forgive her for being a mite petulant tonight. For this one, her wings are clipped. Enjoy Mantra’s walk.

fairylightsWithin

Held deep within the recesses of the brain,
Deliberate effort to keep it contained.

Some days, it’s easy to keep.
Others so difficult, it’s buried so deep.

The innocent ones blend together
Becoming wall fabric holding the others.

The shameful, hurtful, dangerous ones
Which threaten happiness, lives and reputations.

No matter, they are true.
How much the truth harms you.

.

They require you keep knowingly silent
When you’d rather tell and repent

For being the one who broke the chain
By sharing knowledge, despite the pain

It would inflict on those shielded.
Oh, for deafness, you’d never have yielded,

Swung your doors open wide.
Letting the poison inside.

Knowing is gnawing regret
When you keep a secret.

When was the first time you remember being told a secret? Were you able to keep it? Why do we keep secrets? Is that a good reason?

  1. Great poem Red…and so true! Secrets, like hatred, become like a cancer to the soul. Very liberating to be free of both!

I am one in which many confide. There are days when I wish I knew nothing.

  2. I was about ten years old when I was trusted to a very important secret, important in the sense that it should never be repeated to anyone and to this day it never has been…

I guess there are secrets that are not as secret as others, but knowing the difference helps one a great deal, however if one is not prone to gossiping then there is no chance of ever revealing anything which has been offered in a confidence…

To be honest I never listen to gossip, and instead I prefer to find out things for myself, after all pre-judging someone based upon gossiping is totally out of order, and more importantly it is just plain wrong…

    A fine posting Red 🙂

  3. I was the one that people confided in because I never shared secrets, feeling empowered with the knowledge that only the sharer and me knew what it was. The earliest one I remember I was about 4 or 5 years old, and to this day never told anyone, nor will, even though that person has been dead for over 12 years now. I keep secrets because they are told in confidence, and yes, that’s a very good reason!

    Great post, Red!

I, too, do not believe confidence is compromised by the grave. I shall carry many to mine, although the sharer beat me to it.

Just because I am curious, did you get an email for this one?

  4. Secrets weigh us down when we don’t tuck them away in their special drawer. Entertaining them causes an itching tongue.

I like that. I have to admit…I would just as soon forget them. And often have. The truest of “out of sight, out of mind”.

    • And once a secret is told, the itch on the tongue is left unsoothed and soon, we must tell again.

  5. Some secrets should be told, there are confidences I will always break because they are harmful if kept. Others, I will hold forever because they were intended to unburden the one telling and do no harm to me or others.

You and Binky were typing the same thing at the same time. Who is going to call “Jinx”?

  6. Real secrets should be kept forever, unless of course it is something harmful that is better let out.

  7. Nothing in the world is really a secret. How did you find out? Was it something you discovered? No? Who told you? See? The truth always comes out, sooner or later. Sometimes much later. Oh well. Who wanted to keep that secret anyway? “:))

I think Val’s and Binky’s idea of a secret is a bit different. There are the things we tell one another which should never come out…especially those about fear of _________. The fear of self is the secret which, even when shared, is something which must have finite boundaries.

  8. I don’t tell anybody anything in secret because the people I don’t mind knowing tend to blab to the people I don’t want to know. As for keeping secrets, I usually give the disclaimer that I like to blab. The only exception would be if I benefit from the secret.

  9. Amen to gossip is the devil.
People tell me way too much. Probably because I won’t mention it.
Mostly because (for the not that big a deal secret) I won’t remember it…
There are a few I carry that are a bit of a burden, but what can you do?

I have a filing system with very finite memory for those things. I often liken speaking to me as screaming down a well. As long as you stand there, you hear the echo of my response. When you walk away, no one knows anything. It is not that I cannot remember, but instead it is archived. When the archive is full, something inevitably is overwritten. I need more of my brain to function than warehouse 😉
