Behind It

Mantra

You never know what makes a man until you walk a mile in his shoes.”

It has to be one of the best quotes of all time. While we often shorten and personalize it to “Walk a mile in my shoes,” when we want someone to understand our reasoning or our trials, to do so shortchanges it.

Voices was borne of listening to others and hearing the squeak of the shoes. The past is often revealing, not just of our misdeeds, but of the misdeeds done to us. Even more so when the misdeeds include heartache.

Voices

There is a stream
whose babbles sound
like faraway voices
whispering softly.

A gentle, quiet
conversation.
Sweet nothings between
entwined lovers’ hearts.

You remember
those far off days.
No tracking of time.
Warm proximity.

Head laid upon
caring shoulders.
Fingers interlaced.
Ne’er to be apart.

The words all meet…
a melody,
lilting and tender,
sweet and courageous.

Keeping rhythm
set to heartbeats.
Water cascading
over survived hardships.

The landscape brims
with peace and hope
for the tomorrows,
happy and joyous.

Until you pull back
the curtain, reveal
the wellspring is tears…
Lost relationships.

Great poem. All relationships that I have lost or ruined have been very hard on me, but I am just that way.

It would be so cool for you to do a song about this one! I am not so good with lyrics. My poems tend to be too measured…too short…or far too long. When you get a minute, read Knightly. xxx

          Excellent. Enjoy the journey.

You know, I love Depeche Mode, even the old stuff. Like most all music, I enjoy it best when I can listen and not see it. 😉 This is one of my fave of their songs, and I like this rendition.

  4. I’m with Bear on this one.

The greatest loss for me was when Hanna died the year we were planning to be married.

The loss no longer hurts, but the memory is ever lasting…

    Love and hugs!

Loss does change us. Sometimes, we can get past the sheer hurt for the good memories. {HUGZ} Red.

  5. A wonderfully written piece Red 🙂

I guess that breaking up on a relationship whether it be family or a loved one is just as hard, and depending on the hurt inflicted, it can be a lifetime to adjust…

Have a very nice time this evening Red 🙂

I think I am less prone to being hurt breaking off from family than I am for those about whom I care. After all, I did not choose the family.

  6. I like this final stanza from Robert Frost better:

“I shall be telling this with a sigh
    Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.”

I don’t think you ever ‘lose’ a relationship.

To a point, Rob has it right. Death has a strange way of changing things.

  7. For me, the hardest relationship to lose was my son. I thought I was okay, and long periods would pass without a blip, and then an event would unexpectedly set off the tears…. like opening the door to tricker treaters and seeing all the kids in their costumes. It’s not exactly walking in another’s shoes, but it made me realize when dealing with someone, we don’t always know what’s going on under their surface, and when in doubt, cut them some slack.
