Pets make us infinitely happier. The unconditional love is what we wish to receive from all those in our circles. We talk about man’s best friend all of the time. We even make jokes about it…
We are kind to our four-legged friends in ways we are often not so kind to our fellow man. Occasionally, we are better to our pets than to our Mates. We hold grievances against Mate for long stretches of time. The same is not true of our animals.
Puppy breath. Muddy footprints. Teething. Accidents. There is very little about puppies we do not forgive or love. Well, almost.
Puppy
A perfect fit in the palm.
Warm and wiggling. Be still!
So full of energy,
If you’ll sleep, who could tell?
A million tiny footprints
Across the kitchen tile.
Occasional puddles
Never do make me smile.
But your fluttering heartbeat
And your little baby tail
Show me how much you love,
For my heart you assail.
With a whimper you trip.
Into my arms I scoop you.
I tell you to be careful,
But, oh, you never do.
Soon you will learn to play
With the children all day.
Come inside smelling vile.
Get a bath with a smile.
Snuggle into the bed,
Pillow beneath your head.
So, dream about chasing
And when you come racing,
Like a thoroughbred stud
Who’s all covered in mud,
But not eighteen hands tall,
You are still very small.
With my heart on a string
I’d give you anything.
The love of a friend
You’ll carry to the end…
Unless you chew on my shoe.

Do you have a love with paws? Why are we often better to our pets than our Mates? What is your favorite part of puppyhood? Â

/ June 10, 2012haha…the last line is perfect.
Though I would hope my wife is smarter than the dog and knows how to open the trunk from the inside.

Binky

/ June 13, 2012LOL! The other way ’round. I think it is easier to get out of trunks from older cars (personally) because there is far more room to operate.

/ June 10, 2012Red, I loved this post. Great poem.
It’s hard to get’em all in the trunk at the same time when you’re laughing. Tilly the Tall and Ebony the Short make billions of muddy footprints on my heart which I don’t mind; my wife holds it in her hands gently at all times. ~R

Puppies. A maelstrom of happy tails, unhappy messes and unabashed, tail wagging, lap sitting, ball chasing, joy.

/ June 10, 2012My four legged babies are far less demanding than any mate I’ve ever had even when they are jumping and pawing and attempting to get what they want themselves. (the four legged babies, still looking for a mate smart enough to figure out the whole self sufficient thing)

/ June 10, 2012One of my. Issues with dogs is the owners who don’t train and wind up with an obnoxious brat that everyone else is supposed to gush over. If you treat your pet better than people, people will not stay. Unconditional love is great, but one can’t just take it without giving it out too.

/ June 10, 2012Love this poem, Red, and we are also canine lovers! Our dog of 11 years old passed away last November and in March, we adopted a chocolate lab, Copper. He’s now 20 months old )still a big puppy), adorable, cutest personality and very lovable. We miss Lucky Girl, but Copper has filled the void and brought joy to us once again. 🙂

/ June 11, 2012I learned not to love animals – dad used to beat and kill ours after he got in trouble with social services to punish us.
These days I am not allowed pets, a rule of our tenancy, but make a big fuss of my friends pets! 🙂
Love and hugs!

/ June 11, 2012Hahaha… I’m with Bearman… perfect line, Red!
My wife and I live in a non-pet apartment complex, so… you know. I’m quite fond of the wife, though. Pretty sure I won’t be putting her in a trunk anytime soon. I’m kinda surprised she hasn’t thrown me in one yet, though.
