Flash in the Pan

As she folded the last of the laundry, she realized how tired she really was.

After weeks of planning, she had pulled it off. The counselor believed she was really altruistic. Her neighbors were certain she was a saint. Her boyfriend’s family adored her.

Makeup covered the physical markers of fatigue. The lip gloss wand slid over her “thank you for your condolences” smile.

All she had to do for the next few weeks was keep the mental exhaustion in check. She could not afford a mistake during the investigation. It would take about a month to get the report. His health was bad enough they forewent an autopsy in the face of apparent suicide.

When the death certificate was issued, she would run the business as she saw fit. It was a far more powerful piece of paper than a marriage license.

Emmm,
I can’t quite work out whether she is cold and calculated or just a relieved woman, looking forward to jumping a few more hurdles before being free to start a new chapter in her life.
