Muse for Monday

Mantra is  a bit twisted tonight. It seems she is between the light and the dark, yet it is neither dusk nor dawn. Confused? It may even make you laugh.

One of the aspects of poetry which has been ever-present is the humor (what a kind word). The tongue-in-cheek cheek is what makes the world a bearable place when surrounded by the inhabitants of the SIB.

Mantra’s take on the affair is a mite different. She is far less tolerant than the gentle (occasionally biting) sarcasm you have come to expect in the M3 Friday Follies. She simply tires of the endless games and hate and stupidity. By no means does that indicate the fiery fairy has no sense of humor. Indeed, it might be a mite twisted, but it is poignantly humorous as well.

I’m Too Tired is an example of the sprite’s take on sarcasm. It does not come in the vehicle of comic words. Instead, it comes in the morphing of a rhyme you may remember from your, your children’s and your grandchildren’s childhoods. Like the back-and-forth of Friday Follies, the humorous rhythm is designed to lighten the oppression.

Please do not take the masculine genitalia to mean this poem takes sides against one particular sex. In Mantra’s circle, the term is merely a statement of behavior, rather than a gender-specific accusation.

Let’s see what is tiring our Mantra.

I’m Too Tired

One, two,
Throw a shoe.

Three, four,
Slam the door.

Five, six,
Who’s the dick?

Seven, eight,
That’s just great.

Nine, ten,
Do it again.

I’m too tired
To play childish games.
Here are your toys.
Now, go home.

One, two
I hate you.

I’m too tired
To hear you whine,
Take a ration of crap
Or save you.

Three, four
Get out the door.

I’m too tired
For nauseating drama,
The endless parade.
You’re no victim.

Five, six,
It’s just sick.

I’m too tired
To listen to lies
Or give a damn
Who is right.

Seven, eight,
It’s far too late.

I’m too tired
To give CPR
To someone with a
Heart of stone.

Nine, ten,
Never again.

I’m too tired.

Have you ever been too tired? What did the childish nature of the rhyme mean to you? Have you ever thought up different words for a childhood rhyme, song or poem?

  1. I love you Mantra!! You spoke for me in a week when I am tired too, and with much more humor and spark than I could find for the sentiments. I love the playful mix of pretended innocence in the familiar rhyme with the point of your fairy finger at the whiners! I’ve never played with children’s rhymes this way, but my all time favorite is ‘There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly.” It started my love of poetry, and the playful darkness was a beacon!

  2. Personally, I don’t think this would make a very good love poem.

  3. Good one! 🙂

Little miss Muffet sat on her tuffet, her knickers all tattered and torn.

It wasn’t the spider who sat down beside her, but little boy Blue with the horn! 🙂

    Love and hugs!

  4. oh how did I miss this when I was looking right at it when I was here earlier – I know I missed something else but geez louise! .. I laughed with a appreciative snort.. Out loud and then again at Prenin’s addition – oh Mother Goose why do you mock me? us? it is funny too because many of the nursery rhymes are really not about cute things – ring around the rosey anyone? Hah! I am tired too.. Mantra is so clever..
Lots of love – I am glad I was brought back to see it tonight 🙂

    • Mother Goose was a mutha alright. *giggles* There are a ton of MG rhymes which are quite adult pieces of work. I think she must have been Shel Silverstien’s great great grandmother. He is my fave for children’s poems. All of his stuff is so very Merrie Melodies. Cute enough to enthrall the kiddies with enough adult undertones to entertain the parents bringing the little monsters darlings to watch <3 Muah! Glad you circled back.
