Tree Pirates

Climb a Tree

Have you ever climbed a tree? Did you like the view? The change of perspective is good for you. Have you ever pretended to be something you are not? Really? You could learn some lessons from the short ones who live in your house. Let your hair down and have a little fun.

Not every poem has to be gut-wrenching, dripping with romance or even cerebral. On the plate for this afternoon is one which was fun to write. I hope it is also fun to read. Named Tree Pirates very aptly, we are going on an adventure in a tree. In the interest of having a little fun, read on…

…tower faced southward…

Tree Pirates

The boughs sweep wide over the shade
Of the stoic elm in the front yard.
Seems only a moment has passed
Since little tykes climbed. Puppy below on guard
To protect the fortress nestled high
In the branches, its tower faced southward.

Blue jays protest young voices enacting
A fairy tale imagined on the spot,
Not rehearsed or contrived, a gumbo
Of legend served straight from the pot.
Finery imagined, fantasy treasure troves,
Images of adventure in the mind of a tot.

Through a paper tube eye scope, the longboat
Of enemies a-port does appear.
From its cabin windows an unsavory
Crew can be seen: Pirates. It’s clear.
Captain to Mate: Yeoman, ’tis bad news
Have I… Your parents are here.

  1. This is really cute, Red. It reminded me of climbing trees when we were boys, right to the very top, carving our initials in the bark, hanging on tightly in the wind, swinging back and forth 40 or 50′ in the air. We were climbing not-too-reliable poplar trees and were actually in mortal danger, but so what, it was exciting! The imagination does wonderful things! ~R

  2. Ah, the imagination of youth! It’s the one thing that we lose when we grow up that we really should hold onto!

  5. You brought memories both favored and not to mind of dark paths through forests, tall trees sheltering forest monsters from sight and imagination run wild … ahh, don’t think I would wish a return.

    But then I smiled anyway.

  6. Nice imagery. I climbed one once, then couldn’t get down. Scraped knees and elbows for the trouble

    • Ouch! Well, that’s no fun! I have climbed so very many. Nowadays, my children are certain to snap it with their cells.

    • I shall. I have a few more loose ends to tie before I can relax and space hop. I am dreadfully behind in my work, as real life came calling today. Annoying how that continues to happen.

All of us have an inner child. How sad we lose sight of it, all the good times, great memories. Thanks, Red.
