Parenting Your Child Writer

Every parent would love to have a Pulitzer prize-winning child. How do you foster your child’s writing skills to produce a writer?

Back to basics

1. A strong vocabulary is the first step. Your child should not only be able to guess a word when given the definition, but should also be able to define words. Once a definition is established, move toward the use of synonyms.

2. Establish the practice of using correct grammar. All of the flowery words in the world are just words unless you can put them together coherently. Structure is as important to a piece of writing, creative or factual, as is the content.

3. Practice. Writing everyday for a young child may be too strenuous, but is certainly not for a teen writer. Just as with any other art, good writing takes practice.

The Next Phase

4. Allow you child to examine his imagination and creative skills. Provide an environment which stimulates his curiosity. Let him know there are no boundaries to where his writing can take him.

5. Enter your child’s work into contests. Begin with contests into which her work already fits. Then, move to contests which require writing on particular subjects or within more stringent guidelines.

6. Seed the beginning of larger work. Whether your child’s propensity is poetry or fiction, have them begin the epic work which may one day open untold doors for him.

Mandatory

Most of all, have faith in your child. The books and poems are pieces of the child’s soul he has chosen to share with you. Relish these moments.

Strength & Weakness: Theirs

Now, we have looked at strength and weakness in both men and women. How do strength and weakness affect relationships?

Through the Looking Glass

Couples are perceived by their friends and family. These people form and perpetuate opinions of the couple based on the strengths and weaknesses they perceive. Ofttimes, perception is not reality.

Strong Man-Weak Woman

Fictional couple Luke Spencer and Laura Webber...

Considered to be the ideal relationship in many religions, the woman is subservient to her man in all manners. In many cases, this relationship epitomizes what society defines as “marriage” and enjoys great longevity. She submits to his opinion and wishes, regardless of or without her own opinion. His role is open to interpretation:

  • Benevolent head of the relationship/household
  • Protector
  • Manipulative
  • Tyrant
  • Abuser

Behind closed doors, this couple may be far more equal than they portray to the outside world, which may lend to the length of the relationship. On the other hand, sometimes they are far more inequitable than perceived, as in the case of abuse.

Weak Man-Strong Woman

Society frowns on this relationship regardless of the benefits accrued by the couple. Whether it takes the role of a sexual domination (in and out of the bedroom)  or a pervasive ceding of his will to her demands (capricious or otherwise), the man is judged as spineless, whipped or some other equally derogatory term.

This couple is fueled by either a need to be opposite at home than is demanded throughout the work-a-day world or a genuine subservience of the man. Historically, these relationships last only as long as the woman continues to find satisfaction in the relationship.

Weak Man-Weak Woman

KissPostcardThis couple is either terrifically balanced or horrifically abused. Neither emerges as a dominant force and both agree to follow the opinions and wills of outside sources.

In the cases where they follow people who genuinely choose well for them, they are a happy couple floating through life. When the PTB choose to manipulate them, they are prone to taking the position of dupe, often to the point of financial ruin.

This couple will likely be together forever. They lack the initiative to change their own circumstances and are willing to stay with what they have in favor of seeking out anything else. They are unlikely to feel as though they “settled”, instead feeling they have an equal mate.

Strong Man-Strong Woman

The power couple exudes strength to everyone in their path and wake. They function well as a team. Quick judgment leads to accepting the other’s idea as sound, prudent and/or advantageous. The power struggle is never publicly shown.

This couple runs risks. That behavior is as dangerous to their status as it is profitable. Often, what is unseen by the crowd are the internal struggles for dominance, the resentment of ceding power and unforgiveness.

Longevity is in this couple’s future as long as they remain overtly communicative and unite against external forces. When the conflict comes between them, the sheer force of wills can tear the couple apart.

My Answer

Last night’s post about our own identities was cause for some brilliant introspection and some truly intelligent conversation. I deferred until this morning to answer the question myself.

Who are you?

Take this week’s poll. Read the question carefully.

How do you describe yourself most often?

This week, you only get to choose one: Your best answer. Did you pick your answer? Good. Let’s examine your choice.

Really? Did you take the poll? Do it now. You will understand in just a few minutes why I want you to take it before you read any more.

(Now located at the bottom of the post. Take before you read.)

Stranger in Your Midst

If I walked up to you on the street and extended my hand, asking, “Who are you?” how would you describe yourself to me, a complete stranger? (And for those of you who know me, you know I am stranger than most, so the question still applies to you!)

Hello, my name is John Q. Public.

Do all strangers begin with their names? Is this where our identity rests? Do we trust our parents enough to believe they chose the best name for us? Do we offer our name in hopes it will deter other questions?

I am [state your religion].

Are you proud to be a Catholic? Maybe you are a Child of God? Are you a devout Muslim? Maybe you are an Orthodox Jew? Are there any Druids in the house? How about the atheists?

Does your relationship with (or without) a higher power define who you are to yourself and others? Does Acquaintance understand what it means to be a member of your faith?

I am a [state your occupation].

Gavel

Does your job exemplify who you are at the core? Are you always a firefighter? Do you practice law 24 hours a day? Is being a law enforcement officer fundamentally who you are? Can you state with certainty your occupation is the best descriptor of your life? Has it changed over time?

I am [state familial position].

What position defines you? Are you the proud Papa? Maybe you are Grandma? Is your primary descriptor Momma? Maybe you are the Big Brother? Or are you Baby Sister? Are you happily married Mate?

If this was your choice, is your position in the family so stable this is a lifelong moniker? Or have you been displaced at some point? Will you outgrow this definition?

I am [list qualities].

Are you honest or an accomplished liar? Do you have courage and charisma? Maybe you are compassionate and kind? Are you Alpha or submissive? Perhaps you are protective or oppressive?

How often have you not felt playing this part? Have you ever abandoned a quality to pursue your own au moment happiness, fulfillment or satisfaction?

I am unemployed.

200Or are you full time? Are you on salary? Maybe you are an entrepreneur? Or CFO of a Fortune 500? Are you seeking your break-in position in your industry while doing something you find disdainful until you do?

Did you bring a copy of your latest three (3) tax returns as validation? Does your gross income define who you are? How do others receive or respect this descriptor? How often has this position changed?

I am a lifelong [insert political party].

Do you embody all of the platforms? Do you agree without reservation to what the party does? Do you support all its candidates? Vote for all its drafted laws? Are you always in agreement with its leaders and actions? Do you decorate with the party mascot? Does Acquaintance know enough of the real story behind your party to understand this identity?

Disinterested

Not into meeting new people? Afraid to reveal yourself? Uncomfortable giving information to strangers? Protecting your identity and the innocent? What makes you recoil from such a basic question?

Not Even Close?

Are you something else entirely? What is it? How does it translate to your new acquaintance?

You only got one: Why did you choose that one?

Saturday Evening Post

Is there a subliminal message being sent to me through Google? Does my blog have its skirt tucked in its panties? Did a post slip through the technological vortex and get emailed to everyone subscribed?

Odds are 6-1.

For six to one, most people would drop a bigger chunk of change. What are we betting on, exactly? The number one search term to find this blog.

All the search terms below are copied from my list of terms which sent people from a search screen to this blog. You get to choose. These are the games currently being aired, so pick which one is at the top of the chart:

1. bad open relationship

Oh, my. I admit all three words are in this blog somewhere, but for my life I cannot find post one which has all three in the same post. With gobs of talk of marriage and longevity in relationships, I come up with a honking zero on open ones, much less BAD open ones.

2. do your work

I try! Some days are tougher than others, but (regardless of the software being able to tell time) I make a point to get my work done before three minutes to post. I do admit: I posted one 26 seconds before it was due. Am I really not punctual?

just who in the sam hill?3. ways to incur debt

Why in the Sam Hill is anyone searching for this? Really? Why doesn’t Google just give me their credit card number and CCV? I could help out. Honestly.

4. slacker at work

I really think I should be taking this personally.

5. the right to be an outsider

So, maybe I deserve that one. I am an island. I am that far out there.

6. 1999 mazda protege se

I am completely in the dark here. I would not know one if it ran over me in the middle of the living room. Do I need to open a car parts store? Do they even still make these?

7. mouth

There has to be a message attached to this one. But I thought the point of a blog was to write about it so you did not have to preach about it…

8. finger flushing toilet

Wow. I do not know what to do with that one. With little children, I am anal about flushing the toilet (No pun intended.), but what does that even mean?

9. heart with a wall built around it

There has to be a backlink to some of my medical research articles here somewhere. And who types all that in…more than once?

Clueless

10. naughty bedtime clipart

Did Clueless in Seattle find the blog after all? Do I talk about sex that much? And they are looking for illustrations, no less!

Your Turn

You, my loyal audience, have scoured this blog from day one. Which term brings the most people to this blog? You can choose a win, place and show. (Better odds of getting the right one.) You have to tell me what the message is!
